Uma vez que o metal costumeiramente esteve associado a uma imagem de sexo e satanismo, o metal cristão tem sido criticado com freqüência e recebido certa resistência pela igreja tradicional. Apesar disso, as bandas de metal cristão têm persistido e cada vez mais se multiplicam, possuindo estilos que vão desde o evangelismo claro como as primeiras formações do Stryper (conhecidos por atirar Bíblias para o público) a outras bandas como os King's X (que tentaram evitar a associação ao metal cristão, embora demonstrassem uma forte influência cristã em muitas das suas letras).
Atualmente já existem bandas cristãs de todos os estilos de metal, desde rock, a unblack metal (um gênero do metal semelhante ao black metal, mas com temas cristãos), passando por heavy metal, thrash metal, death metal, doom metal, entre outros.
Subgêneros:
Unblack Metal - "Unblack metal", ou como alguns gostam de chamar, "black metal cristão", consiste de bandas cristãs das quais a sonoridade é igual ao do black metal mas com a letras diretamente cristãs, fazendo um oposto a ideologia do black metal, que quase sempre é associado ao satanismo.
Antestor por exemplo é uma banda de unblack metal. É uma das mais antigas bandas cristãs da Noruega. É a única banda cristã a ter um álbum lançado pela gravadora "satânica" Cacophonous Records, o selo que tem contratos com bandas como Dimmu Borgir, Sigh e Bloodstorm.
