FRUIT AND MEMORIES

11/15/09
SUN!! Oh yes, it is the first sunny day in a week of rain and darkness, so I have been out on a nice walk at noon and took a lot of pictures.

Nevertheless I am quite shocked. It all started yesterday evening. I had been talking on the phone with my good friend Niels for about an hour; it was getting later and later and I still had to cook my dinner.

Finally, around 11 p.m., I was peeling my potatoes, had the fish in the pan and had a sip at some red wine, when the phone rang again.
This time it was my old friend Kurt. Kurt and his wife have been my friends since 1973.
For the last years our contact had been somewhat sporadic, but during the last two months Kurt had been phoning me more often again, and as soon as I heard his voice I knew that the loo was burning, as we say in Denmark.

I finished my very late meal as quickly as possible and called him back.
We talked on the phone for the next two hours. He and his wife are in deep trouble. They have been together for over 40 years and now it seems, they sailed their little boat right into a mud-bank without knowing, how to get off again without throwing the other overboard...

I needn't tell you more, do I?

Today, when I left my house to get some air and sunshine, I heard my neighbour rummaging in her little shed. "What are you up to?" I asked her.
"I am emptying my shed", she said, "I am moving out!"

Believe me, nothing could have struck me more. Lone and I have been neighbours for the last 22 years. Good neighbours, helping each other, without ever becoming too familiar. We could speak about everything, but we would not sit on each other's lap, if you understand what I mean. You do need some distance from your neighbours.

Lone comes from Copenhagen, and she has her children and grand children living around the Danish capital, so it is quite natural that she wants to be closer to them, now she is in her 60ies.

I asked her about my other neighbour, as I had seen her emptying his letter box. "He did not tell me, he was on his way to Thailand again", I said.
"Oh, he isn't! He is in hospital with a broken leg and finger!" And she told me that he had been involved in a traffic accident.

So I had something to think about on my walk. I went up a little hill and had a look over the countryside. It had gone. Where there were fields a few years ago there now where houses all over the place.

I feel, it'll soon be time for me to move as well. Live is like a ferry, always in motion, and if a ferry gets moored for too long, it won't bring you anywhere any longer.

This little ferry you see in my picture may be regarded as one of my larger souvenirs, even though I can easily hold it in my hand. Just as my life, I think...

...I hold that in my hand, too!

And until tomorrow you may guess, where I bought this little souvenir.

Hello Erwin!

Thanks, thanks very much for your kind words, my friend.

I'll write you an e-mail later...

Enjoy your sunday, here is too sunny now :)****

Lovely ferry, but I think not European?

Suddenly there's change all around you. It's a bit unsettling. Hope that you get another nice neighbour when the lady next door goes. We went through several changes of neighbours a few years back, three of the 6 flats changed hands, but it's settled down a bit now, at least two of them seem set to stay. And we've been married for 30 years next week, but I don't think there's a mudbank around at the moment. We'd better keep an eye open though, just in case.

Would you consider moving over here if there's work? There could be classes teaching English to children, even in this time of financial crisis, perhaps even more so because parents want their children to have the best opportunities.

Have a good week. Enjoy the sun.

Hello Erwin!

So you have this survenir at home, it may be nice! I love it´s green colour.

Re: no, I have not work on the look yet, but as soon as I can do something about it I will send you an image.

Re: to the Hollowin, I don't like this costumes very much either, but we say in Mexico " a la tierra que vayas has lo que hacen" meanning that we do in other lands what they do when we are there, so I follow suit. The way in Mexico is celebrated (this also is changing by American influences) is that people set a table among other stuff, non parishable food, flowers, and candles, in memory of the family and friends that have passed away. That is called "ofrenda." The bread "pan de muerto" is made a couple of days before and after "Dia de Muertos" all saints day, then they give some bread and fruit away to friends and family aftewards. That is the tradition that I miss. I find this tradition more spiritual.

I don't know how soon I will be back, I tell you later why.

Have a great week my friend!
Hugs,
Mari

Oops! I didn't check the spelling, sorry if you find any hehehe...

What means: "it'll soon be time for me to move as well", ERwin?
May be my translation it's no good....but are you ok?
Hope yes!

Have a lovely start of week, my friend.
:)

Fascinating story you've told us Erwin. Unsettling phone calls late at night and dinners at 11 pm adds another dimension to your life. Glad in one sense that you didn't have to get up early next morning and go to work.
It's hard to believe to the extent the Wall Street rubber baron bankers have managed to affect so negatively the lives of millions around the world.
One thing for sure there are no guaranties in life...Chris

Winds of change... maybe it´s time for you too to take a new turn of the road?

Hab den Computer noch nicht gefixt... :-(

Bis bald!

Nothing stays the same, my friend...

hugs
