Beautiful Sara Orangetip butterfly resting on a leaf

Here is a beautiful Sara Orangetip (Anthocharis sara) butterfly resting (for a moment) on a leaf in the woods. I love the peaches 'n cream colors of these butterflies! (San Marcos Pass, 1 May 2010)

This butterfly is female, with yellow colors. My book says that the "females are white or yellow, with the percentage of yellow females varying from population to population, sometimes over small distances." This is probably the second brood in our mountains. They mostly seem to fly up and down the trails without landing. I chased this butterfly for quite a ways!

May 1 is May Day - it's the workers' day, but it also has deep roots as one of the cross-quarter days midway between vernal equinox and summer solstice. It's the old first day of summer, which explains why "Midsummer Night's Eve" is really the summer solstice - though it's the first day of summer by our calendar. It's interesting how the ancient holidays get recycled again and again.

Today was another windy day. Not quite gale force winds like we've been having, but still too windy for many photos. I hope tomorrow will be calm.

MYKOLOGOS is a group site for photos of mushrooms, fungi, molds, lichens, slime molds, bacterial mats, algae - all those non-flowering plants that don`t follow the usual rules. I figure ferns are marginal unless they show their sporangia.
