California Aster (Lessingia filaginifolia) with tiny Thrips
11/16/09
The beautiful late-season flowers of California Aster (Lessingia filaginifolia aka Corethrogyne filaginifolia) in the composite Sunflower (Asteraceae) plant family are getting a second wind this year after our October rain. (San Marcos Pass, 15 November 2009)
Look close - the anthers joined at the tips into little loops are interesting. Look even closer - see a hoard of tiny orange insect Thrips (order Thysanoptera) trying to hide from my camera. A moment later and no thrips were visible. Talk about camera-shy!
Beautifulest shot!
Have a nice day.
