Soft Scale Insect (Coccidae, Homoptera) on Canyon Live Oak

11/12/09
Insects are scarce in the woods, so I was looking for insect galls in the oaks last weekend. This looks and feels like a gall, but it is actually an insect!

I believe this is a Soft Scale Insect (family Coccidae) in the insect order Homoptera. It's living on a twig of Goldencup Oak aka Canyon Live Oak (Fagaceae chryolepis) in the Fagaceae plant family. Despite the name, it feels hard, like a shell. (San Marcos Pass, 8 November 2009)
