Strange - Variable Checkerspot caterpillars are already active!

It's strange and disturbing - these caterpillars of Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) butterflies are already active on this native Bush Monkey Flower (Mimulus longiflorus) shrub in the Figwort (Scrophulariaceae) family. It's way too early for them!
These Variable Checkerspots are interesting because they overwinter as caterpillars. Last year I thought it was strange that they were active in January - and here they are in early November! The Manzanita's are also flowering way too early. Is this what global warming looks like locally? (San Marcos Pass, 7 November 2009)
beautiful capture, but at what price? thanks for the global warming update. better start taking swimming lessons.
