Wild Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) standing in a field of the "bad grass" - Smilo Grass (Piptatherum miliaceum) - by the Santa Ynez River this morning. Smilo Grass is also known as Millet Mountain Rice and Rice Millet. It's a pretty grass that almost looks native, but it's the worst plant invader in our mountains right now. I've seen it spread hugely near the river and along the roads in the mountains - including our canyon - over the past five years. (Paradise, Santa Ynez River, 10 November 2009)
