White-Lined Sphinx (Hyles lineata, Lepidoptera) on Gladiolus
7/16/09
This is another photo of the White-Lined Sphinx (Hyles lineata) moth that lingered in the garden this morning after its bedtime. The only time it was ever at rest was when it was snuggling into this non-native Gladiolus flower (Iridaceae). (San Marcos Pass, 16 July 2009)
It's a perfect pollenation photo. You can see the moth making contact with the flower's pistil, and yes, its proboscis really does reach down to the nectary at the base of the flower. Look how its antennae lay back, cat-like!
Such an amazing photo!
Such great detail, and nice description
another great one, my friend!
