One minute you're flying free as a butterfly - see my photo from a few days ago:
http://www.fotolog.com/treebeard/52199143- and the next thing you know, you're hanging like a side of beef in a butcher shop!
This unfortunate critter is a
Snowberry Clearwing Moth (
Hemaris diffinis) that has become prey for a
Green Lynx Spider (
Peucetia viridens in the family
Oxyopidae). The spider is perched in a native flower head of
Coyote Mint aka
White-leaf Monardella (
Monardella hypoleuca) in the
Mint (
Lamiaceae) plant family. It's been a productive perch. I watched it snag two Variable Checkerspot butterflies a few days ago in just over an hour. (San Marcos Pass, 12 July 2009)
I got this photo at some risk - I was perched on a narrow rock ledge with my tripod in the shade about 6 feet from the ground. I couldn't fuss too much with focus and exposure!

I'm tired of the spam and junk email that I just have to delete, so I'm closing my guestbook for awhile. Only my Friends/Favorites can post. *Sigh* - this goes against the whole idea of fotolog.
If you want to comment on my photos and you're not on the list, just send email and I'll visit your flog.
