Beautiful Tachinid Fly (Gymnosoma, Tachinidae, Diptera)

7/11/09
"Beautiful fly" seems like an oxymoron, but in this case it's true!

This beautiful fly is a Tachinid Fly (family Tachinidae, order Diptera) despite the absence of bristles. Studying the pictures at bugguide.net, I'm pretty sure this critter is genus Gymnosoma. The adult flies visit flowers, but their larvae are parasitic on other insects in the woods and help control them. They are beneficial - except for the insects they parasitize! (San Marcos Pass, 10 July 2009)

These flies with the big red eyes are active on a horticultural Goldenrod (Solidago) in the garden.
