Beautiful Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus) butterfly
7/10/09
Beautiful Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus) butterfly working the new flowers of Purple Coneflower (Echinaceae purpurea) in the Composite (Asteraceae) family in the garden today. A bird got a good part of its left hindwing, but missed the butterfly itself - as intended. (San Marcos Pass, 10 July 2009)
This butterfly looked so brilliant that I thought it might be something exotic, but I think it checks out as a Western Tiger Swallowtail.

I'm tired of the spam and junk email that I just have to delete, so I'm closing my guestbook for awhile. Only my Friends/Favorites can post. *Sigh* - this goes against the whole idea of fotolog.
If you really want to comment on my photos and you're not on the list, send email and I'll consider your request.
So wonderful!
