Coin-sized Assassin Bug (genus Apiomerus, Reduviidae, Hemiptera)
7/8/09
This is a much larger coin-sized member of the Assassin Bug clan in the Reduviidae family of the order Hemiptera. It's probably a Bee Assassin (Apiomerus crassipes or maybe A. spissipes) or kin, but I didn't get a good look at it. You can see it's mighty proboscis. This assassin in hiding on a branch of Toyon aka California Holly shrub (as in Hollywood) (Heteromeles arbutifolia) in the Rose (Rosaceae) plant family. (San Marcos Pass, 6 July 2009)
All my photos today are Assassin Bugs, but they look very different!
