Thread-legged Bug (subfamily Emesinae, Reduviidae, Hemiptera)
7/8/09
A different Assassin Bug in the Reduviidae family of the order Hemiptera. This one is also tiny, only a few mm long. It's a well-named Thread-legged Bug (subfamily Emesinae) perched on a leaf of non-native Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) in the Parsley (Apiaceae) plant family. We try to control this weed in our canyon, but we always keep a few for the swallowtail butterflies. You can clearly see its dagger-like proboscis. (San Marcos Pass, 8 July 2009)
It's a challenge not to over-expose photos of these tiny insects. I barely made it with this one!
