Remarkable lime kiln that dates back to 1905 on San Marcos Pass

7/5/09
Ted Adams standing by a remarkable lime kiln that dates back to maybe 1905 on San Marcos Pass in the Painted Cave community near the pump house. It's all dry-fit sandstone blocks - a pretty good trick to make a sphere out of blocks as any lego fan will tell you! (San Marcos Pass, 5 July 2009)

If you heat limestone hot enough, you get concrete. They apparently mined the limestone from the travertine build-up by old springs. Rumor is that they used this cement to build the original road to Carpenteria. It seems wrong to bring cement DOWN from the mountains, but maybe that's the way it was until the railroad arrived.

Painted Cave is a few miles east of us on San Marcos Pass. It's been a mountain community for many years. We did a local history hike with the San Marcos Pass Mountain Goats (my name) in the Painted Cave area, down by the pump house. I feel humble - I'd never seen this before.
