Wasp-mimic Syrphid Flower Fly (Syrphidae, Diptera)

7/3/09
Remarkable wasp-mimic Syrphid Flower Fly (family Syrphidae, order Diptera) working a native flower of California Thistle (Cirsium occidentale var. californicum). The genera Sphecomyia and Spilomyia are both strong wasp mimics (among others), but neither has such a long abdomen. I'm not sure what it is - but what color! (San Marcos Pass, 3 July 2009)

Heh - that's a Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) butterfly in the background of the photo. They're everywhere right now!
