Pale Swallowtail (Papilio eurymedon) working Buck Lotus

Pale Swallowtail (Papilio eurymedon) butterfly working the flowers of Buck Lotus (Lotus crassifolius) in the Pea (Fabaceae) family. This interesting perennial only grows along the summits of the mountains. It has characteristic flat sprays of leaves. (Santa Ynez Mountains, 1 July 2009)

Look close at the butterfly and note the pollen on its hindwing. This butterfly has been snuggling with native Humboldt Lily (Lilium humboldtii ssp. ocellatum) flowers!
