Sahara Desert Snow Falls Atop Sand

An atmospheric phenomenon occurs when snow falls in the Sahara desert.
In December 2016, snow fell in the Sahara for the first time since 1979. Technology Satellite acquired this natural-color image of snow in North Africa on December 19, 2016. This scene shows an area near the border of Morocco and Algeria Africa this Christmas time that see snow falling in the desert, it is such a rare occurrence also the snow stayed for about a day and has now melted away around 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level, and is known as the “gateway to the desert”.

Sahara Desert Snow Falls Atop Sand for First Time in 37 Years over Atlas Mountains and the northern edge of the Sahara Red sands turned white as icy flakes fell for the the first time since February 18th, in 1979, snow fell in the Sahara Desert.
