Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) e Gary (Vince Vaughn) estão juntos há dois anos e moram no mesmo apartamento. A vida a dois já não tem a mesma paixão do início e os detalhes da rotina fazem com que eles terminem o relacionamento. Entretanto há um problema: nenhum deles aceita deixar o apartamento que vive, o que faz com que continuem morando juntos. Inicialmente eles tentam viver pacificamente, mas logo descobrem que a melhor saída é tornar a vida do outro um inferno, de forma que saia do apartamento o mais rapidamente possível.

Taking the advice of their repsective friends and confidants (and a few total strangers), they both engage in mental warfare designed to force the other person to flee the premises -- until they both realize they might be fighting to keep their relationship alive.
