To everyone who wished my little sister "Happy Birthday", especially after I've been so inactive here on fotolog-- thank you, from the bottom of my squishy heart. You really cheered her:

Veena: "Wow, so many people bothered to wish me that? I'm shocked. That's so nice...tell them I'm grateful for their comments."

It's hard enough serving overseas, working 12-hour shifts in 120 degree heat, being away from family and friends...spending your birthday like that can be disappointing, but you helped make sure it wasn't. Thank you, again. It meant a lot to both of us.

RE: today's collage...

I'm writing a post on South Asian girls and HAIR, as informally and then repeatedly requested on this mega-thread, over on SM:
http://www.sepiamutiny.com/sepia/archives/004609.html

I wrote that about 48 hours ago and we're already up to 950 comments-- a record for Sepia Mutiny. I guess people have a LOT to say about "hot desi girls being stolen by white guys", which is what started the whole debate. We've touched on everything: ABDs dating FOBs, white girls and desi guys, gay desis also dealing with interracial relationships, whether we "owe" our race anything by being loyal, where to find hot prospects in SF/NYC...it's been insane. Someone actually left work early, to curl up with the thread at home, for a few hours of shallow and ridiculously entertaining reading. ;) Feel free to add your perspective there, if you'd like!

As for here...do you have anything you want to say about your relationship with your tresses?

Here's some of what was said in the above-linked thread, which inspired the "hair post" I'm writing:

"Three cheers for the curly-haired desi girls! Methinks we need some kind of online support group or some such forum to enlighten the rest of the world that we do indeed exist? (I don't know how many times people have asked me if I'm mixed because of my tresses. "I didn't think curly hair was common among Indian women?" Ah, the misconceptions that run rampant.)

I used to envy the flowing manes of other desi chicks but when I realized they were probably going to have severe tress damage by the time they hit 40 from all the flat-ironing, I learned to appreciate mine."

"And to add about straightended hair - I'd say most desi girls with straightened hair are unnaturally so. I've only know like a few Indian girls with stick straight hair... and they always wished it was more wavy and had more body.

milli - funny how people prefer your straight hair. I think straight looks better on me too. But when I'm lazy and my curls manage to come out well - I get a tonnn of attention, more than usual. Probably because so many girls straighten nowadays so it stands out..."

"I heart naturallycurly.com! After discovering that site years and years ago, I went from my sadly amla-oil soaked, slicked-back ponytails to shaking out my curls in all their boingy glory! For the record, I think men with curly hair are drool-worthy, too, especially if they know how to maintain it and have a good cut (think Adrian Grenier from Entourage--total hottie!)."

"When you learn what your curly hair type is (3A, 3B, etc.), it becomes easier to pick the products that work. I used to think it was all about taming my hair 'cause I hated it, but now that I've got my arsenal of beauty products down pat, I can't imagine myself sans ringlets."

Anything to add? I'll keep you anonymous. ;)

I love the collage... And i feel ya with the curls. I have curly hair and its rare that I actually straighten though many think straight looks better on me, but I have definitely appreciate having hair that gives me the option to do 2 different extremes with so many options.

heres to the curls!!!

Hi Anna, I don't think we've met though I have commented on your sister's birthday. My name is Leena and I'm from Dallas. Anyway, if I may comment, I have very curly hair and only straighten it once in awhile. It's amazes me how my son has poker straight hair and my daughter has beautiful curls. I agree w/ Jaycee, it's nice to have the option to go curly or straight. Btw, the collage of you is beautiful.

i had beautiful curls as an infant and toddler and then they went away:( i wish i still had curls and had the option. now i just have unruly waves. doesnt bother me that much since a standard messy updo is the daily routine!! p.s. i love your hair in all of these shots, esp the shorter do's!

love the collage! indian girls and their myriad of hairstyles is indeed an interesting yet endless topic to discuss!

i've always wished i had curls. i know many malu girls with absolutely beautiful curls who flat out REFUSE to leave their house without straightening it. i could never understand loathing something so pretty and part of who they are!

btw, your hair is seriously swoonworthy in all these pics!

Curls or no curls the pictures of the different styles looks amazing!!! I agree with indiemol that your hair is beauitful. I always had curly, wavy, frizzy hair but I do my best to straighten it or gel it so it can be just curly.

people still think i would daily curl my hair back when my hair was longer.

deixando um oi, depois passa lá! vc sabe q ta add né rs
