Balata Refugee Camp, West Bank -- Farah, in the only `real` playground in the camp.
I invited Farah to come to the `art class` that I had helped organize in the small classroom adjacent to the playground. She surprised me by holding onto my hand after I introduced myself and gave her `5`, she spent most of the evening by my side as I took pictures and talked to children, grabbing my hand whenever it was free... I`ll never forget her beautiful smile, gentle character and warm grasp of my hand and heart.
In contrast to the PCHR report (below) of perpetual violations of human rights, international law and UN resolutions by the anti-democratic Israeli state and their criminal occupation is an article on a potent `solution` that appears to be obvious, just and long overdue... replacing the fallacy of a `two state solution` (that in reality is the cantonization of the Palestinian people) with what is described below as a common `state of conscience`.
A State of Conscience
By KHALED DIAB & KATLEEN MAES

"Many on both sides will immediately raise protests and say that this `completely unworkable` idea amounts to a potentially bloody invitation to jump into bed with the enemy ..."
Eight Israeli and Palestinian men and women will soon embark on an extreme peace mission code named icebreaker that will take them to Antarctica. By sailing across oceans and scaling an unclimbed mountain they hope to send a resounding message that the growing chasm between the two peoples is bridgeable.
But when these brave souls return to their divided physically, by a brand new wall and psychologically, by hatred homeland to consider just how to bridge this gulf, they might be excused for reaching the conclusion that their 14,500km journey was the easy leg on the long road to peace.
This voyage into the perilous unknown provides a poignant, scaled-down symbol of how Israelis and Palestinians can work together towards a common goal. Why not then take the model these dedicated adventurers are providing and acknowledge that living on the same land necessarily involves sharing a common future?
This means Palestinians should give up their claim to and struggle for an independent state and the remaining 22% of historic Palestine that has been earmarked for self-rule should be merged with Israel. Radical as it may sound, this solution may finally offer a viable way out of the endless deadlock...

Weekly report on human rights violations
Report, PCHR, 6 - 12 November 2003
This week, Israeli occupying forces have continued to perpetrate violations of human rights against Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs), including incursions into Palestinian areas, willful shooting at Palestinian civilians and indiscriminate shelling of residential areas, particularly in the southern of the Gaza Strip. Israeli forces also continued to impose a tightened siege on the OPTs. This week, 17 Palestinians, including 6 children and a woman, were killed by Israeli occupying forces. 8 of the victims were killed during Israeli military incursions into Palestinian areas and 6 were killed in instances of willful killing by Israeli soldiers. In addition, 3 Palestinian civilians died from previous injuries...
...In the West Bank, Israeli occupying forces conducted a series of incursions into Palestinian controlled areas, particularly in Jenin and Nablus. These incursions were accompanied by intense gunfire, which resulted in the deaths of 5 Palestinians civilians, including 3 children and a woman. A number of Palestinian civilians were also wounded and Israeli occupying forces also destroyed a number of houses and arrested dozens of Palestinians.
In violation of international humanitarian law, in particular the Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 1949, article 33 of which prohibits punishing any protected person for "an offence he or she has not personally committed," Israeli forces took retaliatory measures against the families of Palestinians Israel alleges have ordered, facilitated, or carried out attacks against Israeli targets. In this context, Israeli occupying forces destroyed 4 Palestinian houses in Jenin and a fifth in Silwad village, northeast of Ramallah.
