An accomplished trainer, writer, teacher, and coach, I currently serve as a performance consultant with the United States Coast Guard. Assigned to the Hampton Roads` based Atlantic Area, my primary focus is on the implementation of the Criteria for Performance Excellence, the Coast Guard`s leadership and management framework based on the internationally recognized Baldrige Criteria. I work with leaders at all levels of the Coast Guard to assist them in implementing processes and systems which support the Criteria. In my volunteer life, I serve as the clinical director of the Tidewater Critical Incident Stress Management Team; the team provides crisis intervention services to emergency services personnel in southeastern Virginia. The team is composed of 70 mental health providers, law enforcement officers, fire fighters, rescue personnel, and military members who provide a broad, complete program of crisis intervention interventions. As the senior leader of the team, I am responsible for setting organizational direction and aligning all activities to meet established goals. I`m also a 24-year member of the Coast Guard Reserve; I currently serve as the Senior Reserve Officer at Coast Guard Group Hampton Roads, the boat operations, multi-mission, prevention I am also the alternate deputy group commander, responsible for serving as the deputy commander in his absence. My former assignments include a six-year tour as a maritime search & rescue controller at Rescue Coordination Center Norfolk and two seasons as the executive petty officer at Station Plum Island, Wisconsin. I am a former small boat coxswain and was responsible for the safe prosecution of search & rescue and law enforcement missions. I`m a former high school teacher, technical writer, consultant, and trainer. I`m also a published poet; recently I`ve had several poems published in The Powhatan Review. My work has appeared in other literary journals including The Trinity Review, Silences, and Yes. I edit an online poetry magazine, providing a place for beginning and experienced poets to publish good, solid, lyric and narrative poetry. I also blog, posting to my Tidewater Musings whenever I can carve out the time. I have earned a bachelor`s degree in English with philosophy & history from Trinity College, a master`s degree in counseling & human development from George Mason University, and a master`s degree in national security & strategic studies from the Naval War College. I`ve also earned a graduate certificate in disaster & emergency management from Touro University International. I am currently a doctoral student at Nova Southeastern University, studying organizational leadership and dispute resolution. I live in Portsmouth, Virginia, with my three rambunctious sons, Andrew (12), Richard (10), and the newly arrived Elliot. I enjoy sailing, reading, walking & hiking, cooking & eating, and real estate.
