Ancic beats Melzer in thriller
Holders Croatia got off to a great start in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie when Mario Ancic defeated Jurgen Melzer 67(2) 67(4) 64 64 63, coming back for the first time in his career from two sets to love down to win in 4 hours 30 minutes.
"He played a great match. It's sad in a way that the match did not go my way, I thought I played well enough to win," said a disappointed Melzer.
Melzer's perfect tiebreaks
Jurgen Melzer played perfect tiebreaks to win the first two sets and was generally better on the important points throughout the set, but Ancic had his chances:
"I thought I should be at least one all, and never lost focus. It was few points here and there. The only thing that matter was to stay focused and play set by set".
Ancic twice had relatively easy forehands to break in the first set, but did not make them. Melzer took advantage, played a great tiebreak, and broke at the beginning of the second set. Ancic got back to 3-3 and went on to hold set point in the 12th game. After a short exchange, Melzer hit a great forehand down the line to get out of trouble, then dominated the tiebreak:
"No, I never felt the match was over. Not at all, you can't rule out Mario, he is one of the greatest fighters on the Tour".
Match turns Ancic's way
Meltzer thought that the game at 2-2 in the third set proved a turning point:
"Yes, I got two bad bounces, lost the serve and from then on Mario came on strong. I had some chances in last three sets, but it was difficult to break, most of the time my break points came around, he hit a ace or an unreturnable serve, he also made some big winners. It's a pity I lost, but the positive thing is; it was a great match, I could have run out the winner, and I never dropped my head".
Ancic held for the third set without facing a break-point, then broke in the third game of the fourth set. He saved a break point in the sixth game, but then blew two set points when serving for the set in the 10th game. But, he recovered, saved two break points, and even though he served his only two double faults in that game, he then served a ace to level the match.
"The biggest change I made was being more aggressive after a kick serve. And forehand, I took some chances and made some huge forehands. We both played great, it was a touch and go. Point here and there. It went my way".
Ancic seals first point
It went his way, all the way. Ancic had a break point in the first game of the fifth set, which Melzer saved with a service a winner. But Ancic kept coming, broke in the third game, but had to work hard to finish Melzer. The Austrian No. 1 had a chance to get back on level terms, holding three break points, but Ancic hit two aces and another service winner
The Croat then broke Melzer for the sixth time, giving Croatia the first and wery important rubber, when Melzer put the ball wide on a first match point.
"It is one of my best Davis cup matches, possibly the best one. If we win the tie. But, it's only the first match and we have to stay focused".
Croatia played with a playing captain for the first time in World Group. Ivan Ljubicic was alongside Mario until the third game of the second set, went for a quick bite, and retourned at the end of the set, and finally left the bench, when Ancic broke in the fifth set.
"I had the whole team behind the bench, and that was important. It's not a big deal, since most of our careers we play without the coach alongside, but it was nice when Ivan was there. We could talk it out, he knows my game, and can see something I cannot. Yes, it was a great, great win, coming back from two sets to love down against a great player, and on clay".
Saludos a todos!!!
