En 1930 Ras Tafari Makkonen fue coronado emperador de Etiopía, pasando a llamarse Hailè Selassiè. Según una vieja profecía, este rey libertaríMa a la raza negra del dominio blanco. Muchos jamaicanos, creyentes en la profecía, lo eligieron como el representante de su nueva religión. Fue en este ambiente donde Robert conoció a Neville O'Riley Livingstone (Bunny) y a Peter McIntosh. Juntos comenzaron a tocar, influenciados por la música de Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Brook Benton o Curtis Mayfield. En 1963 forman un grupo, 'Wailing Wailers', lanzando un primer single que alcanzaría el primer puesto en las listas jamaicanas.
