Nippon Budoukan 1.9.2010 & 1.10.201
The first day felt like it was a summarization of all of their lives that they've done so far and the second day was just incredible --- it was even better than the ALL VISIBLE THINGS tour that they did last September. The magnitude of energy, tension and emotion that they made us feel that day was mindblowing. Kyo's solo during Shokubeni --- hearing only his voice echo through the giant walls of Budoukan was like an almost religious experience. His voice was in perfect condition for these lives. Their rendition of Hydra-666- with the pillars of fire was also a hit with the audience. Unleashing an onslaught of cheers and unearthly growls from the crowd. But I guess what really got the whole crowd excited was Dir en grey playing Diety at the start of the 2nd day. Hearing the opening intro of the song, I heard screams come from everyone around me. It was unbelievable. Nobody really expected them to perform that song on that day. Kyo's performance of GLASS SKIN, THE PLEDGE, Ware Yami ni Tote and INCONVENIENT IDEAL brought tears to the eyes of the audience. Plus to add more to the incredible world-view that Dir en grey has shown us, they included songs that they haven't performed in over a year, The Final and dead tree. These two songs were a staple at previous Dir en grey lives and hearing them again live felt different this time.
The members mentioned once that whatever was released in the CD can never be fully reproduced at lives but instead --- these songs are like living and breathing entities taking a life of their own and change into something else entirely at lives. Maybe that's why we find ourselves constantly going to see them live because each and every live is different.
To understand Dir en grey. To understand UROBOROS. You first need to see it live.
I personally feel very privileged to have been able to witness the beginning and the culmination of this long journey that started with their release of DOZING GREEN more than 2 years ago.
After their UROBOROS -breathing- performance in Osaka-jo Hall, it was then followed by their Kerrang tour then the FEAST OF V SENSES tour that included a livehouse circuit tour then followed by their standing live tour. It was during this time that Kyo finally reached his limit and had to postpone two shows due to his throat. But not succumbing to defeat, they were touring again soon after. Going to Europe and then performing their ALL VISIBLE THINGS tour. Showing to all of us that they weren't hiding anything by performing both Akuro no Oka and Schwein no Isu on the 1st day. It was then followed by a tour of the US and then their DORJE lives to finally end 2009.
Like the mythical serpent, UROBOROS, what began in Osaka-jo Hall as UROBOROS -breathing- last December 29, 2008 culminated in two monster performances at Nippon Budoukan on January 9 and 10, 2010, UROBOROS -with the proof in the name of living...-
It is fitting that UROBOROS, which began with SA BIR then VINUSHKA also ended with VINUSHKA and then SA BIR.
And then to give us all a glimpse of what is to come, they then showed the full PV of their new single, "Hageshisa to Kono Mune no Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu no Yami".
Nobody was expecting it but it was a welcome surprise. The audience sang along with the video and even moshed to it as it was projected on a big screen. I have never attended a live wherein you can clearly hear thousands of voices meld into one even if the band was not onstage. It was definitely one of the greatest Dir en grey lives I've ever been to.
Where they are headed, I personally don't know myself. But I know that with their unshakeable determination and belief in their music. Wherever they are headed, it's definitely somewhere remarkable.
