O foco principal de "Os Pássaros" não são os ataques, e sim o medo psicológico das pessoas sobre algo que elas nunca imaginaram que pudesse oferecer perigo. Hitchcock buscou trabalhar no subconsciente das pessoas, fazendo com que elas temessem as coisas menos temíveis possíveis. E deu certo, pelo menos na época. Há registros de pânico em algumas salas de exibição devido principalmente aos efeitos especiais empregados na película, bastante realistas para a década de 60.
