Prabal Gurung’s SS17 collection celebrates the complexity of women, layered beneath a surface of beauty. He has found his muse in the feminist activist Gloria Steinem, whose femininity with a bite underpins his latest collection.
Other influences include the provocative neon quotes of Tracey Emin on statement t-shirts, florals inspired by the paintings of William Kentridge and the stark uncompromising photographs of Taryn Simon. Prabal Gurung wants to demonstrate the power of choice and encourage us to explore beneath the surface.
This notion of modern feminism is reflected in a loosening of silhouettes juxtaposed with refined tailoring, creating a fluidity of fabric and movement in his gorgeous midi-length evening gowns. Noteworthy pieces include shirt dresses with fluid skirts and sensual thigh high slits and long bias cut slip dresses which cling to the body. Hand engraved hardware details, made in Prabal’s native Nepal, are to remind us of women’s journey and vigor.
