Christian Charles Philip Bale es hijo de David Bale, piloto de aviación, y de Jenny James, una bailarina circense. Su padre se casó en segundas nupcias con la feminista Gloria Steinem. Tiene tres hermanas mayores llamadas Sharon, Erin y Louise.
Christian debutó en 1984 en el teatro representando la obra "The Nerd" junto a Rowan Atkinson, posteriormente famoso con el personaje cómico de Mr. Bean.
En 1987, cuando contaba con trece años de edad, saltó a la fama al interpretar la película "El imperio del sol" (1987), dirigida por Steven Spielberg.
Posteriormente intervino en "Enrique V" (1989) de Kenneth Branagh, "La isla del tesoro" (1990) de Fraser C. Heston, "Rebeldes del swing" (1993) de Thomas Carter o "Mujercitas" (1994) de Gilliam Armstrong.
El progreso de actor infantil a adulto resultó satisfactorio, ya que Bale ha impulsado su trayectoria cinematográfica con películas como "Retrato de una dama" (1996) de Jane Campion, "Velvet Goldmine" (1998) de Todd Haynes, "Shaft" (2000) de John Singleton o "American Psycho" (2000) de Mary Harron.
En enero del año 2000 se casó con Sibi Blasic, asistente personal de la actriz Winona Ryder. Ambos residen en Escocia.
Le encantan los animales y la lectura. Además es un activo defensor de la naturaleza y el medio ambiente.
Algunos de sus últimos estrenos son "El Maquinista" (2004), "Batman Begins" (2005), film en el que incorporaba al hombre murciélago, y "Truco final - El Prestigio" (2006), película co-protagonizada por Hugh Jackman y Michael Caine.
Será John Connor en "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" (2009), cuarta entrega de la saga Terminator que dirige McG.
