"I Paint With Light "An Interview by Ellen Jawit. The world of atoms and molecules, once shrouded in mystery can be brought into focus by specialist photographers at the Technion. Using the electron microscope, these photogaphers are able to capture tiny particles and split-second reactions, producing pictures that researchers can examine later at length. One such photogapher is Benny Shafir, who began his career at the Technion-Israel Institute Of Technology in 1968 when he joined the Department of Chemical Engineering as a technician. At the same time he studied photography at the Techion`s Division of Continuing Education, and became enthralled by the technical and creative possibilities of the camera. When the faculty moved from the old Hadar campus to Technion City, Benny took this opportunity to turn his hobby into a profession. Persuading the faculty of the benefits of having its own research photography laboratory, Benny succeeded in establishing the Chemical Engineering Photogaphy Unit, which he has headed ever since. On entring Benny's office; at the Technion, one is awed by the display of creativity which is the fruit of his leisure time. On the walls are silkscreens lithographs that are based on his photographs and then washed with color. From the massive to the miniscule, Benny`s photo interests encompass such diverse subjects as the Manhattan skyline, Israeli architecture, botany, sparkling crystals, and microscopic glass fibers. When asked to describe his photographic technique, Benny responds, "I paint with light."for now I love particulary Botany and the beautiful nature flowers of Israel.
