Happy Bastille Day
7/14/09
Its the 14th of July and that means its the Fête Nationale, also generally referred to as le quatorze juillet in France and which most of the rest of us simply know as Bastille Day. This year to mark changing times no wretched aristocrats will be guillotined, instead some senior bank CEO and hedge fund managers will place their heads on the block for the amusement of the masses. Okay, they're not doing it, but somehow I don't think many of us would object if they were! Vive la revolution!
Since I've never been in Paris on this date I'll have to make do with this pic I took earlier of a cover on a wine bottle depicting the event. This was in my local French deli-restaurant La Marche Francais, not far from my flat, the one where I sometimes get the wine bottle filled directly from the barrels and corked then and there (and some fromage to go with it, naturellement!), they had it on the counter and were kind enough to indulge me when it caught my eye and I asked if they'd mind me taking a couple of snaps.
Home early today after leaving to go to the dentist, was due my regular 6 monthly check up which I had thought about postponing in a money saving move, but with that bad tooth breaking at the weekend I had to go in urgently. Wasn't great but wasn't as bad as I feared, it was beyond repair but he smoothed it down and said it was fine to be left like that for now, so no extraction, phew. But then I had to get an injection in the opposite side of my mouth as he spotted something needing work on that side, so I've had that numb feeling as if your jaw is sticking out for a couple of hours, thankfully now wearing off so I can eat, ravenous!
Maybe one year you'll get over for the festivities. Here are some pics from the beeb: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/8150063.stm
Good to hear you got on ok at the dentist. I hate having to go. Hope you treated yourself to something really nice as a reward.
Hugs, P
