Perhaps Mitty was like a lot of people I know who had fulfillment in their lives only through daydreams of adventures they never had the opportunity to play out on a real life stage. I have known many people whose best days were always in the past.
Fotolog has been a stage where I was able to play back some of the moments of my life and I have enjoyed doing so. Pictures, both mine and ones I found, have triggered memories I have treasured and enjoy sharing. "Montage-a-Google gives me the power to find pics of strange and ancient events that give rise to memories over different eras of my life. I wonder if Walter Mitty wold have continued playing out dreams if he had been put on hold by a caprecious server or had his words blown away in the ether by a falty upload?
I am nearing the end of my patience with fotolog. Much as I have enjoyed playing here and sharing with all of you, my newfound friends, I have seen more of the people I have enjoyed communicating with leave for other pastures such as flickr. If it lived up to its full potential, there is nothing in the world like fotolog, especially if you want to communicate as much as you want to post photographs. Flickr is a pale imitation except it is easy to post without the "bugs" making life difficult. To me, I`d rather nail my pics on a telephone pole for all the connectedness that is there.
But, when I try to go to other fotlogs, I get a spinning wheel and no connection. Often when I try to post, nothing happens. When I try to access my friends/favorites, I am often told that it is being updated. When I open my own homepage, it takes so long to load that the picture I had planned to upload is already outdated! Many of the people I shared thoughts with are gone. I do not get the urge to write when there will be little or no response.
Unlike Walter Mitty, I do not live my life in a world of fantasy. I create fantasies in my writing becasue it is fun, not becasue I will try to live in the sandcastles i construct in midair. I live in reality and, for the most part, it has been a wonderful journey. What I don`t need is frustration. I walked away from jobs and friendships because they became more maintenance than pleasure. I believe in giving everything and everyone in my life a fair chance to prove their worthiness. I have given fotolog more than a fair chance and I believe that I have contributed far more than I have taken. At this point, it has become so one-sided that I am doing my Cheshire Cat imitation as my contribution to the Walter Mitty archives. Soon, all that will be left is the smile for I will be gone.
I will miss many of you with whom I`ve shared a moment or two and we have become involved a little in each others` lives. But, there is less reason to stay each day. The frustrations outweigh the positives.
I`ll contemplate upon this decision for a while before I act upon it by using the delete button.

I´m sorry to tell you... but now you are talking just like one of those depressed kids, which you told me about that you don´t like to see on fotolog.net!!!
You always told me that you loved my fotolog, as in my pictures I would always bring hapiness with my photos!!
Please I ask you not to go, just because fotolog.net is giving some problems!
You are mature enough to be able to deal with these little problems in life...
I really think that before you take any decisions, you should think of the people that is around you and that loves you...
Because, if you don´t realise, you´ll make a lot of people sad and you should really think of those people that would cry, because you are not posting those wonderfull texts and thoughts of yours!!!
Don´t think only about yourself...
I know that sometimes it is good to think only about yourself!
But please I ask you to stay... your fotolog also bring me hapiness!
I love when you write a comment in ma fotolog, even though you havn´t been doing that latelly...I understand that you have been just as busy as I have been... and I admit that I havn´t been posting so many pictures lately..

I totally understand but i feel my home is here with fotolog for the time being. I`m glad i have your email address just in case you decide to venture to other pastures! i hope your day is a great one. Things on this end are happy and healthy, physically and emotionally so no complaints. :) Love ya!

I find that the sense of community--always Fotolog`s strong point--is starting to fracture and fade. Not because of Fotolog`s size, but because of the technical problems, though the sheer magnitude and popularity of the site obviously contribute to the problems.
I could not blame you in the least for leaving. Even now I don`t bother uploading new photos here anymore, I just check in on my Friends/Favorites, but often they`re not available or not working.
Flickr is overly complicated and commercialized, in my opinion. I now use Fotothing.com for sharing photos and thoughts. It has many nascent communities. It`s still young, and perhaps overly twee for my tastes, but the site has definite potential.
I had my Walter Mitty stage as a child, but outgrew it. Nowadays I like even the stories I read for entertainment to have the strongest possible resemblance to reality. Somehow I get encouragement and motivation from realism. Part of my scientific bent, I guess.
You will be sadly missed as I can`t wait to see what you have next. FYI, you make a difference in my life.... Thanks
Um...it`s "pocketa pocketa QUEEP", and as I remember the Thurber story (of which, to my taste, the movie was a travesty, ignoring as it did that Mitty was trapped in his middle-aged life rather than--o Hollywood trope--a youth overwhelmed by his mother), all crises were airily sketched as "complicated"--a neat and hilarious dismissal.

oh, sad to know you`re planning to leave. i have practically abandoned ship myself, and i`m flickr-based now. i agree with your criticism of flickr, but i couldn`t stand fotolog`s tech problems anymore. it`s really a pity, but oh well - i guess this is just a business, even though we were probably illuded thinking that it was something more.
anyhow, stop by my flickr anytime. hope you switch over too, or at least leave a note here on where you`re at so we can find you.
in any case i just came here to let you know that tomorrow, when the edinburgh fringe box office opens, i`m putting in my order for some slideshow tickets!! i just saw that they were going to play at the fringe and was overjoyed, immediately remembering to come tell you :)
