The City of Turku has continued its centuries-old tradition of declaring the Christmas Peace on Christmas Eve. The declaration was proclaimed at noon on Christmas Eve from the balcony of Brinkkala House, which adjoins the Turku Market Square.

Once the clock of the Turku Cathedral tolled noon on Christmas Eve, Chief Secretary Jouko K. Lehmusto fulfilled a duty that dates back to medieval times, reading the traditional peace declaration from a parchment in Finnish and Swedish.

The declaration urges everyone in the city to adopt a quiet and peaceful temperament and to respect the Christmas spirit. It also threatens serious punishments for those who violate the peace.

A naval orchestra and the men’s choir “Laulun Ystävät” (Friends of Song) conducted by Timo Kotilainen provided seasonal entertainment about half an hour before the declaration.

The entire event was capped by a performance of the patriotic song “Porilaisten Marssi” (March of the Pori Brigade), the honorary march of Finnish Defense Forces and used since 1918.
