The railway tunnel from Helsby Quarry

6/14/09
I've lived near here for well over 50 years and never even knew there was a quarry up Helsby Hill. It's been disused since the 1920s but even so!

The quarry was in use throughout the 1800s and there was a tramway - and later a railway - from the quarry across Ince Marshes to Ince Pier from where the sandstone was shipped to Liverpool. Many of Liverpool’s docks were built with stone from here.

I love industrial ruins. This combination of the Triassic and the lush woodlands is particularly interesting. There are spots like this throughout the north and west, up to Carlisle perhaps, wherever the geology and the industrial dereliction are right.

A really amazing series, and very interesting the history that goes with it. How come you have a name like Birkenhead?
Thank you for sharing the story and the great pictures!
Margit

yes, I wondered, because birch tree is Birke in German - thank you for your information.
Good night!

I remember the monitoring post from a geography A level field trip I helped lead back in 1986. Placing the post on a hilltop so that it could be thoroughly irradiated if the big one was dropped was a stroke of civil defence genius.

I went to school in the Manchester area in the 1970s, and taught high school in Ipswich in the mid 1980s. For some reason, we visited the North West for an "A" Level field trip in 1986. I am getting a little rusty on the details now, but I remember a lot about the North West of England. My mother lives in Saddleworth.

Wow! This looks great!!!
Is this up the hill where you have been with me and us some times yet?
How are you Jenny and how is your dad doing?
Love, Birgit

The house is doing very well! After some terrible moments with mostly all of the workmen nothing really is terrible any more! The house is looking great, the new windows are wonderful, the roof is the most beautiful one in the village ;)) and Wednesday the house will be painted and after that the scaffolding will be removed and they work on the terrace and then they can rebuild the arch between house and garage! :)) Sounds good ey!?
Well, we have to tapezieren around all windows and paint most of all rooms because it is ten years that we did it the last time but I can live with that... we had one week of holidays yet and have two left and that's good because it has been a hard time having the workmen and work ourselfs.
We will be happy to present you to our "new" house! :))
Love, Birgit

... and to present our new house to you! ;D
