Se apagó la voz principal de los míticos "Mamas and the Papas"
El cantante canadiense Denny Doherty, miembro del cuarteto ícono de los 60´ y el movimiento hippie, y autor de clásicos como "California Dreaming" y "Monday, Monday", murió a los 66 años, de un mal no específicado.
El cantante canadiense Denny Doherty, integrante del cuarteto "The Mamas and the Papas" que creó temas como "California Dreaming" y "Monday, Monday", murió hoy en Mississauga, Canadá, a los 66 años, informaron fuentes de su familia.
Su hermana, Frances Arnold, señaló que el cantante y compositor falleció después de una breve enfermedad sin especificar su naturaleza.
El grupo, de dos hombres y dos mujeres, subió a los primeros lugares de la popularidad en 1996 con "California Dreaming", después de romper la tradición estadounidense de conjuntos que eran exclusivamente de hombres o exclusivamente de mujeres.
A ese éxito siguió el de "Monday, Monday" que ocupó el primer lugar de las listas en Estados Unidos y les llevó a ganar el premio Grammy concedido al mejor grupo de música contemporánea.
Otros éxitos del cuarteto fueron "I Saw Her Again Last Night", "Go Where You Wanna Go" y sus particulares versiones de "I Call Your Name" y "Dedicated to the One I Love".
Los otros integrantes del grupo eran John Phillips, principal compositor del grupo; su esposa, Michelle, y la vocalista Cass Elliot, quien es ahora la única superviviente del conjunto. Phillips murió en 2001.
Pero la fama de "The Mamas and the Papas" fue breve y después de recuperar el estrellato con "Monday, Monday" sus miembros decidieron separarse tras el divorcio de Michelle y John.
En 1971 se juntaron nuevamente para grabar el álbum "People Like Us".
La posibilidad de que volvieran a actuar juntos terminó trágicamente en 1982 con la muerte de Elliot de un ataque al corazón en Londres.
Doherty, quien nació en Halifax, inició su carretera musical en Montreal en 1960 cuando fundó el conjunto "The Colonials" que posteriormente se convertiría en el grupo "Halifax Three".
En uno de sus últimos trabajos artísticos Doherty produjo un espectáculo llamado "Dream a Little Dream" que narraba desde su perspectiva la historia de "The Mamas and the Papas".
En 1993 Doherty interpretó el papel del capitán de puerto en "Theodore Tugboat", una historia de televisión para niños en la que dio su voz a todos los personajes.
